The University of Regina men's hockey team dropped the second game of a weekend set, falling 6-3 to Mount Royal University on Saturday afternoon.
Matthew Brown scored his Canada West leading ninth and tenth goals of the season, while Matt Bellerive, Jarid Hauptman, Brady Gaudet and Grant Baker also lit the lamp for MRU.
Cody Fowlie,
Ian McNulty and
Miguel Pereira scored for Regina (2-10-0).
The first goal for Mount Royal came on the powerplay following a great shorthanded chance for the Cougars.
Dillan McCombie made an impressive end-to-end rush and had a two-on-one opportunity with
Brock Appleyard. The pass across was behind Appleyard and MRU collected it, heading the other way. Cody Cartier fed the puck to Bellerive in the slot and he wired a wrist shot past the blocker of
Mitch Kilgore.
The visitors would score again 58 seconds later, as Hauptman netted his third goal of the weekend. The first-year forward collected the puck in the neutral zone and went along the left boards, attempting to send a pass in front. The puck went off the skate of a Cougars defender and slipped through the pads of Kilgore, expanding the MRU lead to 2-0 on Hauptman's fourth goal of the season.
After a series of penalties in the second period, the Cougars found themselves on a 4-on-3 powerplay. The Cougars seemed to have the momentum, but a blast from the point was blocked by MRU's Mackenze Johnston. Johnston was hobbled by the shot, having taken if off the lower leg, but continued to kill the powerplay. As the Cougars controlled the puck at the point, Johnston made a gutsy play to dive and tip the puck out of the zone. Gaudet picked it up and went in on a breakaway, ripping a slapshot low past the pad of Kilgore for the shorthanded marker.
Regina wasted no time getting on the board in the third period, as Fowlie banged one in over the shoulder of Colin Cooper. The Cougars showed some aggression in the offensive zone as
Austin Bourhis collected a loose puck and went driving towards the net. Cooper made the initial save but Fowlie was there for the rebound, popping it home for his third goal of the season.
Mount Royal brushed any hopes of a Cougar comeback aside just a few minutes after the Fowlie goal, thanks to Baker and Brown. Baker's goal came after Tyler Fiddler scooped up a puck in his own end and went the length of the ice before finding a trailing Baker. Baker took the feed and snapped a quick shot past the glove of Kilgore. Brown scored less than two minutes later after Bellerive sent a pass in front. Brown's first shot was stopped by Kilgore but he banged in the rebound to bump the lead to 5-1.
Regina would add two more goals late, as McNulty tipped in a point shot from the point by
John Sonntag. McNulty's second marker of the season was also assisted by
Christian Magnus. Pereira also found the net in the dying minutes, taking a feed from Tyler Geibel behind the net and beating Cooper form a sharp angle to cut the lead to 5-3.
Brown would add an empty netter after Pereira's goal to seal the deal, earning MRU (6-4-2) the weekend sweep.
Kilgore made 28 saves in the loss, while Cooper picked up his second win in two days with 26 saves.
Regina is back in action next weekend, travelling to Lethbridge for a pair of games against the Pronghorns.
