Ian McNulty had a third period hat trick as the University of Regina men's hockey team snapped the Lethbridge Pronghorns' five-game winning streak with a 7-4 win on Friday night.
The Cougars offence erupted for seven goals, getting three from McNulty (pictured) and singles from
Mark Schneider,
Austin Bourhis, Dylen McKinaly and
Landon Peel. McKinlay also tallied assists on two of McNulty's goals and
Brody Luhning also added two helpers.
It was Lethbridge that struck first on Friday night, as Artsiom Kalishnikov was able to beat
Andy Desautels who would earn his first Canada West win. Kalishnikov's opening marker was answered five minutes later, as McKinlay scored his third of the season on the powerplay.
Sanfred King and Luhning assisted on the goal.
The Cougars would jump ahead to a 3-1 lead in the second period, thanks to defencemen Bourhis and Schneider. Bourhis scored his first of the season with helpers from
Miguel Pereira and Tyler Geibel, and Schneider's second of the campaign was set up by Luhning and
Cody Fowlie.
Lethbridge would get one back off the stick of Dalton Sward, but Regina restored its two-goal lead before the end of the second thanks to Cougar newcomer Peel.
Trent Lofthouse and
Troy Hunter were responsible for creating the opportunity for Peel's second goal as a Cougar.
The third period belonged to McNulty, who scored his third, fourth and fifth goals of the season in the final frame. The third-year forward out of Brooks, Alta. scored at the 5:07, 8:05 and 12:36 marks of the period. Lethbridge got goals from Brock Hirsche and Spenser Jensen in the third period, but McNulty's offensive explosion was too much.
Desautels was impressive in just his second start with the Cougars, stopping 38 out of the 42 shots that were sent his way. The Cougars peppered Damien Ketlo with 40 shots, 33 of which he stopped.
The win moves the Cougars to 3-10 and drops Lethbridge to 6-6-1. Tomorrow's game is set for 1 p.m. local time and will be streamed live at www.canadawest.tv.
