Jaycee Magwood (pictured) scored her second and third goals of the season as the University of Regina women's hockey team downed Mount Royal University 5-2 in Calgary on Friday.
Stephanie Sawchuk,
Kylie Gavelin and
Alexis Larson also scored for the Cougars, who improve to 4-4-2-1 with the win. Sarah Weninger and Jordan Finnie replied for MRU.
The Cougars opened the scoring just two minutes and three seconds into the contest, as
Nikki Watters-Matthes took a feed from Gavelin in the slot and fed it over to Magwood who found the open cage. MRU replied just over two minutes later, but the Cougars scored four unanswered to put the game out of reach.
Sawchuk netted her first of the season at the midway point of the first period off an assist from Magwood, and Gavelin beat Jessica Ross with a wrist shot to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead after the opening frame.
The second period passed by without much offensive action, but Larson took a feed from
Krista Metz with less than a minute to play and beat Emma Pincott, who was on in relief of Ross.
Magwood scored her second of the night at the 7:10 mark of the third period with a helper from captain
Carleen Meszaros. MRU would find the net once more thanks to Finnie, but it was too little too late as the Cougars took the series opener.
Toni Ross was impressive in net for the Cougars, starting her 11th consecutive game and making 37 saves in the win. Mount Royal outshot the Cougars 39-14, but Ross stood her ground in net to keep the MRU attack grounded.
The two teams will square off for the second game of their double-header on Saturday afternoon at the Flames Community Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time and the game will be broadcast on www.canadawest.tv.
