The University of Regina's women's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to No. 2-ranked Trinity Western on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre.
After a 25-10 loss in the opening set, the Cougars put together their best run of the weekend in the second. They matched the Spartans point for point, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead at any point during the set. Four consecutive points for the Cougars with rookie
Diana Lumbala serving put the U of R up 20-18, but Trinity Western responded with three straight points of its own and never trailed the rest of the way. The Spartans broke a 23-23 tie with an Elizabeth Wendel kill, then clinched a 25-23 win on an attack error by the Cougars.
Trinity Western then rode that momentum to a 25-15 win in the third set, clinching the sweep for the Spartans as they improve to 8-0 on the year.
Wendel finished with a match-high 13 kills for TWU, while Rowyn Neufeld added nine kills and hit .444 in the win. Katelyn Devaney and Wendel each had five blocks, with libero Mariel Garcia finishing with a match-high nine digs.
Tori Glynn led the Cougars with nine kills and tied
Kristine Ward for the team lead with six digs. Rookie
Erika Burns made her fourth consecutive start at setter and finished with 16 assists.
The Cougars will have next weekend off before returning to action on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 at home against the University of Manitoba.
