Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kot helps No. 5 Cougars remain unbeaten with win over Alberta

The No. 5-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team remained undefeated in Canada West play with a big 71-50 road win over Alberta on Friday night at the Saville Centre.

It was the first conference loss of the season for Alberta, which had come in with a 6-0 Canada West record and ranked No. 10 in the nation.

Charlotte Kot continued her stellar season for the Cougars, leading all players in both points (24) and rebounds (14) to post her third double-double of the year. The fourth-year forward now ranks fourth in Canada West with an average of 17.4 points per game and second in the conference with 11.4 rebounds per contest.

Alyssia Kajati ended up just short of joining Kot with a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine boards. Katie Polischuk added 14 points and five assists for the Cougars, who dominated the rebound battle with a 57-37 advantage on the boards.

The Cougars (5-0) are one of only two teams without a Canada West loss. Saskatchewan is now 8-0 after a Thursday/Friday sweep at Trinity Western.

Regina closed out the first quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 22-13 after the opening 10 minutes, and held Alberta scoreless over the last three minutes of the second to help build up a 38-22 lead at halftime. And the Cougars put it away after halftime, scoring 11 straight points over a span of five minutes to turn a 14-point lead into a 25-point advantage.

Alberta's Jessilyn Fairbanks had a team-leading 19 points.

The Cougars and the Pandas will close out the weekend series on Saturday night (5:00, canadawest.tv).
