The University of Regina women's hockey team was shut out on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the hometown Manitoba Bisons in both teams' final Canada West action before the December break.
The game was tough and physical from the start, with both teams setting an aggressive tone early. Manitoba outshot the Cougars 17-8 in the opening period, but
Toni Ross was steady in net, keeping the Bisons off the scoreboard.
Regina's offence bounced back in the second period, outshooting the Bisons 11-4, but was not able to solve Rachel Dyck.
Caitlin Fyten scored the deciding goal late in the third period after
Jaycee Magwood was whistled for a hooking penalty. The Cougars pulled Ross in search of the equalizer but we unable to sneak one past the Bisons goaltender.
Ross made 29 saves in the game, while Dyck stopped 34 saves for the win.
The next action for the Cougars is on Jan. 8, 2016 when they will visit the Calgary Dinos.
