Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Sawchuk helps Cougars to first win of 2016

The University of Regina women's hockey team won a seesaw of a battle against the Calgary Dinos on Friday night, coming away with a 4-3 win in its first Canada West action of 2016.

The line of Kylie Gavelin, Jaycee Magwood and Stephanie Sawchuk (pictured) was on fire on Friday night, combining for three goals and six points. Tessa Wilson also found the net for the Cougars, scoring her first goal of the season in the win.

Sawchuk continued her hot play, notching a goal and two assists, while Magwood (one goal and one assist) and Gavelin (one goal) did their best to keep pace with CIS scoring leader Iya Gavrilova. Gavrilova had a goal and a helper of her own on Friday night, while Kelsie Lang and Kate Lumley were also able to beat Regina netminder Toni Ross.

Regina jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Wilson scored an unassisted marker one minute and 33 seconds in, and Gavelin scored at the 17:15 mark of the first period. Calgary would storm back in the second period, as Lang netted a powerplay goal and Gavrilova scored near the end of the frame to tie things up heading into the third period.

The Dinos would carry that momentum into the third period, scoring their third-straight goal to take a 3-2 lead. Lumley was able to score her first of the season on the powerplay at the 10:22 mark to put the home team up, but the rollercoaster continued as Regina had an answer.

The Cougars tied it up again with just over five minutes to play in regulation, as Sawchuk took a feed from Bailey Braden and slipped a shot past Sarah Murray. The fifth-year forward's fifth goal of the season was not her last point of the night, as she set up Magwood three minutes later for the game winner.

Magwood's goal came on the powerplay after Stephanie Zvonkovic was whistled for bodychecking. The Cougars powerplay, which finished 1/6 on the night, came up big when it needed to and gave the Cougars the win.

Ross and Murray each faced 30 shots on the game.

The results moves the Cougars from fifth place to third in a crowded Canada West, with a 7-6-3-1 record. Calgary drops to 2-10-1-4. The Cougars will try and complete the season sweep of the Dinos on Saturday at 3 p.m. local time.
