It was a wild game that featured 22 lead changes and 15 tie scores, and eventually the University of Regina's men's basketball team held on for a 74-71 road win over Winnipeg on Friday night.
The only time the two teams were separated by more than four points was for a span of less than a minute in the third quarter. They were tied 12-12 after one, the Cougars had a 38-36 lead at halftime, and a 51-49 advantage after three.
Though it was a one-possession game the entire fourth quarter, it was a quiet final period in terms of offence as the two teams combined for only 25 points. Winnipeg's Jordan Clennon scored a basket with two minutes left to give the Wesmen a 71-70 lead, but that would turn out to be the home team's final points of the contest.Â
Mike Malecha tied the game with a free throw two possessions later, and a
Jonathan Tull basket put the Cougars into the lead for good. The Cougars had three defensive stops in the final minute, including at the buzzer when Travis Krahn's attempted three from the top of the arc rimmed out to seal the win for the U of R.
Jonathan Tull finished with a game-high 18 points for the Cougars, who improve to 8-11 with the win.
Brandon Tull added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while
Will Tallman had 12 points and eight boards.
Christopher Baxter led Winnipeg (11-8) with 15 points.
The two teams will finish off the weekend set on Saturday afternoon (4:00,
canadawest.tv). For the Cougars, it will be their final game of the 2014-15 season.
