The University of Regina's women's volleyball team lost 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 to UBC on Saturday night as the Cougars played their final match of the 2014-15 season at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.
Â
The win gives UBC a 13-11 Canada West record and the five seed in the Canada West postseason. The Thunderbirds actually finish in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference standings with Manitoba and Brandon, but UBC wins the tiebreaker based on a superior sets won/sets lost differential.
Â
Lisa Barclay led UBC with 11 kills, while Danielle Brisebois had nine kills and hit .500 and Abbey Keeping added eight kills while hitting .571 in the win. Setter Kelsey Clarke had 29 assists, while Juliana Kaufmanis led all players with nine digs and both Barclay and Ciara Hanly had a team-high four blocks.
Â
Michelle Sweeting provided the highlight for the Cougars, as her service ace early in the third set gave her the University of Regina's all-time rally-point era lead in the category. It was the 103rd ace of her career, and Sweeting – who had 12 kills for the Cougars – also finishes as the school's career leader in both kills (995) and blocks (353).
Â
Molly Wade-Cummings had one block on Saturday to finish with 95 for the year, which stands as a school single-season record. She just edged out Sweeting, who also had a block on Saturday to finish with 94 on the season. Sweeting, who missed nine sets to injury earlier this season, did set a U of R single-season record with an average of 1.15 blocks per set this year.
Â
Besides Sweeting's 12 kills on Saturday, the Cougars also had eight from
Chelsea Ziolkowski in her final game with the U of R. The team's other fifth-year player, libero
Lindsay Braul, finished with a team-high seven digs.
Â
For the second straight night, rookie setter
Mackenzie Timmerman controlled the U of R offence with
Leah Shevkenek out. Timmerman finished with 25 assists, three digs, and a block.
Â
The loss gives the Cougars a 7-17 record as they finish in 11th place in the Canada West standings.
