The University of Regina's men's basketball team finished off a commanding two-game weekend sweep over Trinity Western with a 95-60 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Six different Cougars scored in double figures in the victory, led by 16 points from
Aaron McGowan.
The victory improves Regina's record to 7-3 as the Cougars now have four consecutive wins and are tied with Manitoba for third place in the Pioneer Division.
"I thought we were pretty well focused defensively over the course of the entire weekend," Cougars head coach
Steve Burrows said. "As we go forward and we get into more meaningful games, the transition baskets are going to dry up so we're going to have to continue to be able to execute offensively under pressure as we did at times tonight."
Stephen Shields had career highs in both points (11) and rebounds (10) as he notched his first double-double as a Cougar, while
Alex Igual and
Will Tallman had 13 points apiece.
Brandon Tull finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while
Jonathan Tull added 10 points for the Cougars. Besides his 13 points, Igual also filled the stat sheet with seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Playing in his second game since transferring from the University of Tennessee,
Rawane Ndiaye had nine points and five rebounds for the Cougars in 15 minutes on the floor.
Trinity Western (0-10) had a game-high 19 points from Kelvin Smith, while Lucas Mannes had 16 points and a team-leading eight rebounds for the Spartans.
The Cougars will have next weekend off, their second bye weekend of the conference schedule. They'll use that time to prepare for a showdown against a UBC team that currently leads the Pioneer Division with an 8-2 record. UBC is in action next weekend at Manitoba, then will host the Cougars on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 in Vancouver.
