Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars earn weekend split with 6-3 win over Lethbridge

Dillan McCombie (pictured) scored his first two Canada West goals and Zach McPhee also had a pair as the University of Regina's men's hockey team earned a weekend split on Saturday with a 6-3 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at The Co-operators Centre.

Brock Appleyard and Cody Fowlie also scored for the Cougars, while Dawson MacAuley turned aside 34 of the 37 shots he faced to notch his second win of the campaign.

Mitchell Maxwell, Ryon Moser, and Spenser Jensen each scored for Lethbridge.

"I was happy with how we fought through a little adversity today," Cougars head coach Todd Johnson said. "We made some bad mistakes to give up some goals, but we kept a positive demeanour on the bench and showed plenty of resiliency."

McCombie opened the scoring eight minutes into the first after taking a nice pass from Ian McNulty near the right faceoff dot and snapping a shot past Lethbridge goalie Damien Ketlo. The Cougars extended that lead when Brock Appleyard had his initial shot saved, but the veteran forward pounced on his own rebound and buried his second of the season.

The Cougars extended their lead to 3-0 seven minutes into the middle stanza courtesy of McPhee after he barrelled up the right wing and rifled a shot to the far side that beat Ketlo.

Lethbridge took its first penalty of the game a few minutes later after a double minor for high sticking was assessed to Brent Henke, but it was the Pronghorns that found the back of the next. Sam McKechnie gave Maxwell a partial breakaway off a faceoff in the defensive zone, and Maxwell's fifth of the season got Lethbridge back to within two.

The two teams combined for five goals in the span of eight minutes in the third period, starting with Fowlie's goal 7:38 in that would eventually go down as the game winner.

Lethbridge scored just 10 seconds later after a turnover in the Cougar zone. Moser was the beneficiary of that turnover, making no mistake to get the visitors back to within two at 4-2.

McCombie's second of the game restored the three-goal lead, but Lethbridge responded again - this time with a strange one. Jensen scored on a shot from near the left dot but the puck went in right around the time that Lethbridge's Tim Campbell and Regina's Devon McMullen got into a minor altercation in the neutral zone. The referees blew down play, but not until a split second after Jensen's goal and it was allowed to stand.

But the Cougars once again had a response, this time in the form of McPhee's second goal of the contest which came on a fine deflection off a Brody Luhning shot.

Both teams are back in action next weekend. The Cougars will have two games at Alberta, while Lethbridge hosts Manitoba.
