Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kajati’s layup gives Cougars 71-69 road win at UBC

Alyssia Kajati's bucket with 1.1 seconds remaining gave the University of Regina's women's basketball team a 71-69 road win over UBC on Friday night in a Canada West game in Vancouver.

After UBC tied it up with eight seconds to go, the Cougars had a chance to score for the win. And score they did, as Sidney Dobner found Kajati wide open underneath the basket and the fifth-year post laid it off the glass and in to give the U of R its 10th Canada West victory of the season.

But just a few minutes earlier, it didn't look like the Cougars would need a game-winning basket. They held a 55-39 lead after a Kehlsie Crone layup with two minutes to go in the third, but they scored only four points over the next nine minutes as UBC's 18-4 run brought the visitors to within two with three minutes left. The Thunderbirds tied it up on a tough runner by Jessica Hanson to draw even for the first time since the second quarter, setting the stage for Kajati's last-second basket.

"Obviously I wasn't happy with our defensive performance in the fourth, but we'd done enough previously to build enough of a lead and Sidney made a great read at the end to find Kajati down low," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "When you're on the road in Canada West, you've got to be happy to walk away with a win and we were fortunate to be able to do that tonight."

The victory improves Regina's record to 10-1 as the Cougars stay within a half game of second-place Alberta (11-1) in the Canada West standings.

Charlotte Kot finished with a team-leading 20 points for the Cougars, while Kajati was 8-for-10 from the field and scored 19. Christina McCusker had 10 points in 10 minutes off the bench for the U of R, while Dobner finished with a game-high six assists.

Diana Lee led all players with 25 points for UBC, which falls to 6-7 with the loss.

The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night starting at 5:00 (PST).
