Box Score The University of Regina's women's basketball team made it six consecutive wins with a 69-61 road win over UBC on Saturday night in a Canada West game at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.
And unlike Friday, they didn't need a buzzer beater do it – the Cougars had a huge third quarter to push what had been a four-point lead at the half up to a 47-34 advantage heading into the fourth. In the final quarter, UBC briefly got the lead back down to eight with just over two minutes to go but that was as close as they'd come. The Cougars iced the win with six free throws down the stretch, including four from veteran guard
Sidney Dobner (pictured) alone.
It was a career night for Dobner, who piled up career highs with 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Cougars to their 11th Canada West win of the season. The third-place Cougars remain a half game back of second-place Alberta (12-1) and one game behind division-leading Saskatchewan (12-0), which was idle this weekend.
Besides Dobner's 21 points, both
Alyssia Kajati (14) and
Kehlsie Crone (10) broke into double figures in scoring in the win.
Charlotte Kot added seven points and tied Dobner for the game high with eight rebounds.
UBC (6-8) was led by Kara Spotton's 18 points.
The Cougars will now prepare for their second consecutive weekend away from home. They'll play two times next weekend at Manitoba, with the Bisons (1-13) coming off a 76-65 win on Saturday which was their first Canada West victory of the 2015-16 campaign.
