Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Maclise leads MRU past Cougars

The University of Regina men's hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision at the hands of the Mount Royal University Cougars in Canada West action on Friday night.

Cam Maclise scored twice and added two assists for MRU, which got goals from Jamie King, Jordan McNaughton and MacKenzie Johnston. Christian Magnus replied with his first two goals of the season and Miguel Pereira notched his seventh.

Mitch Kilgore had a busy night in between the pipes for Regina, stopping 35 of the 40 shots that were directed his way. Cam Lanigan was solid at the other end of the ice, making 17 saves in the win.

The Cougars were first out of the gates on Friday, as Ian McNulty sent a pass in front where Magnus went bar-down with the wrist shot. MRU answered five minutes later, after a wild scramble in front of Kilgore. The puck found its way to Maclise at the side of the net and he buried his 10th of the season.

The scoring continued in the first period, as Devon McMullen hopped into the rush from his defence position and slid a nice saucer pass across to Pereira. Pereira was able to get a stick on it, slapping it past Lanigan.

Mount Royal would explode for four consecutive goals after Pereira's marker, as McNaughton would start the parade near the end of the first period. Maclise added his second early in the third before King and Johnston also beat Kilgore to put the home team up 5-2 heading into the third. The action continued into the third period, with Regina gaining back a bit of momentum. The Cougars had their highest shot total in the third period, testing Lanigan 10 times. Only Magnus was able to solve the goaltender, potting a rebound off a John Sonntag shot with just over a minute to play.

Regina (5-18-0) and MRU will battle again on Saturday at 3 p.m. local time.
