The University of Regina's women's basketball team pulled into a tie for second place in the Pioneer Division with a convincing 79-43 win over Trinity Western on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Charlotte Kot led all players in both points and rebounds, finishing with 16 and 13 for her fourth double-double of the Canada West schedule.
Kehlsie Crone added 13 points, while
Sidney Dobner had 10 points and led the Cougars in both steals (4) and assists (3).
The win improves Regina's conference record to 8-1 as the Cougars draw even with idle Alberta for second place in the division.
"I was happy with our effort tonight coming out of the extended break," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "I thought we shot the ball well, but we'll need to clean up our turnovers moving forward. I thought Charlotte (Kot) was great for us again tonight with another double-double, and
Caitlin Zacharias came off the bench and gave us a real spark."
The Cougars went on an early 9-0 run and built up a 10-point lead with four minutes to go in the first quarter, and they would hold on to that double-digit advantage for the entire rest of the game with the exception of a brief period late in the first half when TWU got to within eight.
Regina held a 36-25 lead at the break and simply took over in the third quarter. The Cougars went on an 11-0 run midway through the third that featured three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, two of which were by Crone. The Cougars led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter before a late 5-0 run by TWU put the final margin of victory at 36.
Kristin Ford came off the bench to shoot 4-for-7 from the field and lead Trinity Western with 11 points. Kayla Gordon added eight for the Spartans, who fall to 3-6 with the loss.
Zacharias hit both of her three-point attempts and finished with seven points in nine minutes. As a team, the Cougars were 30-for-49 (61.2%) from the field overall and 9-for-13 (69.2%) from three-point range. The U of R also had a 37-25 rebounding advantage.
The two teams will finish off the weekend set on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the CKHS.
