The University of Regina women's hockey team is at home for the second-straight weekend as the Canada West schedule gets rolling, as the Cougars will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns for a two-game set.
Regina opened conference play last weekend with a pair of wins over Mount Royal, as seven different Cougar skaters found the net in 4-1 and 3-1 wins at The Co-operators Centre.
Emma Waldenberger,
Elise Endicott,
Kylie Gavelin and
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch scored in Friday night's win, while
Merissa Zerr,
Jaycee Magwood and
Alexis Larson netted goals on Saturday afternoon.
"We're hoping that we can continue to see that scoring balance moving forward," fourth-year forward
Bailey Braden said. "The team is very gifted offensively - everyone is capable of scoring, we've seen it in practice and we hope it continues throughout the season."
The adjustment to CIS play seemed to be no issue for a young Cougar roster, as five out of seven rookie skaters registered at least a point in their debut weekends and
Jane Kish picked up her first and second career wins in net.
"A lot of us (veteran players) try to lead by example both on and off the ice, and I think the rookies have really followed that so far," Braden added. "I've been able to offer advice, but they've already done a really good job of matching the level of intensity that we try and play with.
"I was on a line with
Sam Geekie last weekend, and she has a great ability to see the puck well. She's always an option in both zones and her positioning is really strong."
Lethbridge enters the weekend after two home-ice losses against the Manitoba Bisons, surrendering a total of 97 shots in 2-0 and 6-1 losses.Â
Gavelin, Magwood, Carpenter-Boesch and Zerr all collected a goal and an assist for the Cougars, while
Kaitlyn Crowe,
Chelsea Hallson,
Tamara McVannel,
Krista Metz,
Meghan Sherven,
Nikki Watters-Matthes and Braden (pictured) each earned one assist.
Kish was the winning goaltender in both games for the Cougars, after making just four appearances a season ago. The second-year netminder made 28 saves in Friday's game and stopped 20 shots on Saturday.
The Cougars and Pronghorns met once in the pre-season, as Regina topped Lethbridge 3-2 in the Mandi Schwartz Challenge.
Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre, while puck drop for Saturday's rematch is slated for 3 p.m.
