Sydney Langen's hat trick powered the University of Regina's women's soccer team to a 5-1 road victory over Thompson Rivers on Saturday afternoon, a win that clinches a Canada West postseason berth for the Cougars.
The Cougars (4-6-3) could still finish fourth, fifth, or sixth in the Prairie Division standings depending on the outcome of Sunday's matches, which include the U of R finishing up the conference schedule on the road at UBC Okanagan (4-8-1). Regina will hit the road to face one of Calgary, MacEwan, or Saskatchewan next week in the first round of the Canada West playoffs.
Saturday's game saw the Cougars burst out of the gates with Langen (pictured) notching her first goal as a Cougar just six minutes in after finishing off a nice feed from Vorrieter. And Langen struck again less than eight minutes later, taking advantage of a Thompson Rivers giveaway and putting the Cougars up 2-0 in the early going.
Vorrieter added to the lead with a beauty in the 35th minute, taking on several WolfPack defenders before beating TRU keeper Alyssa Smith for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Cougars sealed the win after being awarded a penalty kick. Langen made no mistake, drilling it into the left side of the net to join Meagan Cormier as the only University of Regina players ever to score at least three goals in a game. Cormier had a four-goal effort in a win over Winnipeg back during the 2012 season.
TRU's Sasha Sirianni spoiled the Cougar shutout in the 56th minute, but that was the only offence the WolfPack were able to muster.
Kayla McDonald restored the four-goal lead just before injury time in the second half, collecting a goal on a nice header off a corner kick sent in by
Racquel Marshall.
The Cougars and UBC Okanagan will kick off on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 (PDT).
