Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Wright's late goal seals win, six-point weekend for Cougars

Brianna Wright's goal in the 88th minute was the only score of the contest as the University of Regina's women's soccer team took a 1-0 road victory over UBC Okanagan on Sunday afternoon in Kelowna, B.C.

Wright's goal came following a well-delivered through ball from Shayla Kapila. Wright fired a low drive into the left corner of the net, giving the third-year forward her second goal of the 2016 season and helping secure a six-point weekend for the Cougars.

The Cougars (5-6-3) finish in fourth place in the Prairie Division standings as they return to the postseason for the first time since 2013. They'll meet provincial rival Saskatchewan in the first round of the Canada West playoffs next weekend in Saskatoon, as the Huskies finished in third place with an 8-3-3 record.

Playing in her final conference match, fifth-year keeper Kacey McFee got the start for the Cougars and collected the seventh clean sheet of her CIS career. She'll finish her time at the U of R second in school history with her seven shutouts, just one behind all-time leader Michelle Anderson.

McFee made six saves to secure the shutout, while the UBC Okanagan tandem of Caralina Serrano and Francesca Balletta combined to make five saves. The Heat had a 14-10 advantage in shot attempts during the match.

Regina and Saskatchewan will kick off at noon next Saturday, Oct. 29 as the two teams meet in the postseason for the second time in history. The winner will advance to the Canada West Final Six, which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in the Pacific Division.
