The University of Regina men's hockey team fell 4-3 to the No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night, after Andrew Johnson was able to break the deadlock with just over two minutes to play.
Tyler King,
Tristan Frei and
Tyson Predinchuk scored for the Cougars. Josh Roach, Michael Sofillas, Cameron Blair and Johnson scored for the hometown Huskies, who move to 6-1-1 with the win.
Andy Desautels was stellar in net for Regina, making 47 saves in the loss. Jordan Cooke stopped 18 shots at the other end of the rink.
After a scoreless first period, Roach opened the scoring just over a minute into the second period. Sofillas added to the lead at the 5:57 mark, batting in a rebound on the powerplay following an
Austin Bourhis tripping call.
Frei (pictured) and
Logan Harland set up King's marker later in the second, but Blair scored near the start of the third period.
Frei notched the first goal of his Canada West career on the powerplay at the 6:05 mark, off assists from
Dillan McCombie and
Kirk Bear. Another first was accomplished just 55 seconds later as Predinchuk netted his first career marker to draw the Cougars even.
Johnson's game-winning goal came at the 17:15 mark as he circled from behind the net and slipped a shot to the short side past Desautels.
Regina will be at home next weekend, hosting the Alberta Golden Bears for a pair of games.
