Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars hold on for non-conference win over Saskatchewan

The University of Regina's women's basketball team survived a late charge from the Saskatchewan Huskies as the Cougars held on for a 60-58 win on Day 2 of the Cougar Classic on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars had led the entire game and pushed the lead into double digits late in the third quarter, but Saskatchewan scored eight straight points and the game was a one-possession affair for the entire last six minutes. The Huskies took their first lead of the game with four minutes to go, but a big three-point play by Katie Polischuk put the Cougars back into the lead for good and would turn out to be the last field goal of the game for either team.

Saskatchewan's Kelsey Lalor had one final attempt at the buzzer, but her potential game-winning long three-pointer missed to seal the win for the U of R.

Charlotte Kot led the Cougars with 12 points and seven rebounds, but only played 18 minutes as she spent much of the game in foul trouble and eventually fouled out with over four minutes to go in the fourth. Polischuk added 10 points for the U of R, while Kyia Giles scored nine off the bench and Kyanna Giles got the start and finished with eight points.

Sabine Dukate led Saskatchewan with 16 points.

The Cougars will now play Carleton for the tournament championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the final game of the Cougar Classic. Ryerson and Fraser Valley also play on Saturday with an 11 a.m. scheduled start.
