The University of Regina men's hockey team withstood a late rally from the UBC Thunderbirds and came out with a 4-3 win at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday, completing the weekend sweep.
The Cougars' top line of
J.J. Coleshaw,
Tristan Frei and
Cody Fowlie each had multi-point games for the second-straight night, as Coleshaw and Frei each had a goal and a helper and Fowlie added two assists.
"We had a good week at practice and our communication was solid throughout the weekend," Fowlie said of his linemates. "On top of that we buried our chances when we had them."
Isaac Schacher and
Gray Marr each scored their first goals in Cougar uniforms in the win. Joe Carvalho, Joe Antilla and Manraj Hayer replied for UBC.
Schacher's goal opened the scoring at the 5:34 mark of the first period, as the first-year defenceman intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and fired a long wrist shot that sailed over the shoulder of Matt Hewitt to put the Cougars on top.
Coleshaw added to the Cougar lead just a minute and a half later, taking a pass from Fowlie and swerving around Hewitt to slide home his fourth of the season. Marr's goal came early in the second period after an impressive effort from Fowlie. The Cougar captain flew down the right boards and wheeled into the middle of the ice, taking three UBC defenders with him. Marr was left all alone in front and deflected Fowlie's pass through the pads of Hewitt.
Carvalho answered just 41 seconds later with a quick wrist shot that beat
Andy Desautels short side. Antilla scored early in the third to cut the Cougar lead to one, but Frei scored his third of the weekend midway through the final frame to restore the two-goal lead.
A deflection from Hayer at the 16:47 mark drew UBC back within a goal but the Cougars were able to hold off a tough Thunderbird attack in the final minutes to secure the win.
Desautels was impressive in net for the second consecutive night, making 20 saves for his third win of the season. Hewitt stopped 21 shots as UBC falls to 4-8-0.
Regina (3-9-0) will head to Calgary next weekend to battle the fourth-place Dinos.
"We'll definitely try and carry our momentum into next weekend," Fowlie added. "Playing with speed and using our bodies are the biggest things, and we can put ourselves in a good spot by putting pucks on net and staying disciplined."
