Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars fall in double-overtime thriller

The University of Regina men's hockey team suffered a tough 5-4 loss in double overtime to the Calgary Dinos on Friday night.

All four of the Cougar goals came in the second period, as Landon Peel, Zach McPhee, Tristan Frei and Logan Harland were able to beat Steven Stanford. Gray Marr (pictured) added two assists for the Cougars.

Elgin Pearce, Jared Hauf, Darcy DeRoose, Dylan Busenius and Danny Gayle scored for the Dinos.

Pearce opened the scoring at 15:44 of the first period, before the teams combined for seven goals in the second. Peel scored a powerplay marker at 1:24 and McPhee added another with the man advantage about six minutes later. The Dinos responded for three straight but Frei scored at 17:01 and Harland found the net at the 17:42 mark to tie the game at 4-4.

The game took a sudden turn and became a defensive battle in the third period, with the Cougars only registering five shots on goal and Calgary countering with nine.

The first five-minute overtime passed with no score, but the ice opened up as the second extra frame was played with just three skaters on each side. With both teams noticeably fatigued, it looked like the game was destined for a shootout but Gayle scooted inside a Cougar defender and slipped one between the pads of Andy Desautels with just 28 seconds left in the period.

Desautels made 23 saves on the night, while Stanford stopped 19 shots at the other end of the rink. The Cougars drop to 3-10-0 with the result.

Regina and Calgary will have a quick turn around before a Saturday afternoon rematch, scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.
