Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars impressive at TWU in largest road win in team history

The University of Regina's men's basketball team was impressive from start to finish on Friday night as the Cougars rolled to a big 107-74 win over Trinity Western at the Langley Events Centre.

The 33-point win was the largest road victory in program history for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 3-2 with the win.

Eight different players scored in double figures for the Cougars, led by Johneil Johnson's 16 points. Alex Igual scored 11 points in the first quarter alone and finished with 15, while Ramiro Martinez added 14, Brian Ofori scored 12, Aaron McGowan and Stephen Shields had 11, and Matthew Augustine and Brandon Tull both scored 10. The Cougars shot 51% from the field as a team in the win and were 15-for-33 from three-point range, led by Martinez's four triples on six attempts.

Vartan Tanielian led Trinity Western (2-5) with a game-high 23 points.

It didn't take the Cougars long to jump out to an early lead, going on an early 8-0 run with Igual catching fire in the first quarter. The fourth-year guard was perfect in the opening period, going 4-for-4 and hitting three triples to help Regina to a 22-12 lead after 10 minutes.

Johnson was 5-for-7 from the field and hit two three-pointers in the second quarter, which saw the Cougars pile up 32 points to Trinity Western's 12 as the visitors took a massive 54-24 lead into the halftime break.

The Cougars then went on a 16-2 run in the third quarter to end any hopes of a TWU comeback. Regina led by as many as 44 points in the second half while coasting to their third conference victory of the season.

The U of R will try for its second win over Trinity Western in as many nights on Saturday night. Game time is set for 8 p.m. PST.

NOTES: Before Friday, the largest road win in Cougar history had been a 110-80 victory over Winnipeg back in 1998 ... that game also stands as the most points ever scored in a road game by the Cougars.
