Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars suffer hard-fought four-set loss to Manitoba

Jenna Krahn had a double-double for the University of Regina's women's volleyball team, but the Cougars suffered a hard-fought four-set road loss to Manitoba on Saturday afternoon at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

After Manitoba opened the match with a 25-17 win in the first set, the Cougars used a late run of four consecutive points to win their first set of the season after holding off the Bisons for a 25-20 victory to equal the match at a set apiece.

The Bisons won by another 25-17 score in the third set to go up 2-1 in the match. Needing a win to push the match the distance, the Cougars put together a late 5-1 run to turn a two-point deficit into a two-point lead at 22-20. Manitoba immediately tied it up and an Ashlee Sandiford kill gave the Cougars a 23-22 advantage, but that was the last time the Cougars led. Manitoba finally converted on their sixth attempt at match point, getting a block by Haille Bujan and Darby Coughlin to give the Bisons a 30-28 win.

Twin sisters Josie Abbott and Kearley Abbott combined for 27 of Manitoba's kills, with Josie tying for the match lead with 14. Libero Cassie Bujan had 16 digs, while Sydney Booker had 39 assists and Jocelyn Koswin led Manitoba at the net with seven blocks.

Krahn finished with 14 kills and 10 digs for the Cougars as the fifth-year outside hitter collected her second career double-double. Libero Taylor Ungar piled up a match-leading 22 digs, while Sandiford finished with 12 kills and six digs. Rookie middle Kathleen Bruce tied Koswin for the match lead with seven blocks.

The Cougars will be back in action on home court against Saskatchewan on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19.
