Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Kupper scores twice as Cougars handle ‘Horns

The University of Regina women's hockey team rolled to a 5-2 win against the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada West action on Friday night.

Kylee Kupper had a pair of goals, Bailey Braden chipped in with a goal and an assist and Jaycee Magwood and Tamara McVannel also scored in the win. Tricia Van Vaerenbergh had both goals for Lethbridge.

After a scoreless first period, Magwood netted her Canada West-leading 10th goal of the season on an unassisted effort with just over five minutes left in the second period. Magwood's marker sparked a flurry of goals, as Kupper scored her first of the night less than a minute later off an assist from Krista Metz. Van Vaerenbergh netted her first of the night less than a minute after Kupper's goal, beating Jane Kish off assists from Jenae Culp and Kirana Stocker.

McVannel beat Alicia Anderson once more before the middle frame ended, taking a feed from Braden and scoring her first goal of the 2016-17 campaign.

Van Vaerenbergh cut the Cougar lead down to just a goal with her second of the night just over six minutes into the third, making the score 3-2. After nearly 10 minutes of action without a goal, Braden ripped a powerplay marker upstairs past Anderson to give the Cougars an insurance goal. Lilla Carpenter-Boesch and Merissa Zerr assisted on Braden's fourth of the season.

Kupper dismissed any chance of a late comeback with an unassisted empty netter with less than three minutes to go.

Kish stopped 21 shots to pick up her seventh win of the Canada West season, a total which ranks her second among goalies in the conference. Anderson made 36 saves as Lethbridge drops to 2-10-1.

The Cougars (8-6-0-1) move back into fourth place in the conference, just a point back of third-place Saskatchewan. Regina and Lethbridge will battle again on Saturday with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. local time.
