Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars lose in three sets to No. 1-ranked Alberta

Faced with the task of playing the No. 1-ranked team in the nation on the road, the University of Regina's women's volleyball team fell in three sets on Friday night to the Alberta Pandas at the Saville Centre in Edmonton.

Alberta's offence simply couldn't be stopped. The Pandas hit a ridiculous .408 as a team in the win, with Karly Janssen leading the way with eight kills and no errors on 11 attacks for a .727 hitting percentage. Kacey Otto had a double-double with match highs in both kills (11) and digs (12), while Meg Casault added 10 kills for Alberta (9-0).

Mariah Walsh dished out 30 assists for the Pandas.

Leah Sywanyk (pictured) was again the bright spot offensively for the Cougars, coming off the bench to put down six kills and finish the match with a .556 hitting percentage. Sywanyk has only started a pair of matches for the U of R, but has 24 kills and is hitting a team-high .311 on the season.

Alberta hit .419 in the first set, which the Pandas won by a 25-17 margin. They were even better in the second, hitting .556 as a team and cruising to a 25-13 win. Alberta put away its ninth win in as many Canada West matches this year with a 25-16 win in the third.

The Cougars (0-9) will meet Alberta again on Saturday night (5:00 MST).
