Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Thunderbirds force Game 3 with 1-0 victory

The University of Regina women's hockey team was blanked by the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday night, which sets up a decisive Game 3 in the Canada West semifinal series.

Kathleen Cahoon scored the game's lone goal, striking at the 11:38 mark of the first period with a high wrist shot that beat Toni Ross short side. UBC's top line was responsible for the difference maker, as Rebecca Unrau and Logan Boyd collected assists on the goal.

Danielle Dube did the rest for the T-Birds, stopping all 25 Cougar shots to earn the shutout and help force a third game.

It was a hard-fought and physical battle from the start, as the teams combined for 30 penalty minutes but went a combined 0/13 on the powerplay.

Both teams had multiple shots ring off iron, as a Kylie Gavelin wrist shot hit the post in the first period and a Jaycee Magwood attempt struck the bar in the third. Magwood tallied seven shots on net for the contest while Gavelin had five of her own.

Ross made 16 saves in net for the Cougars, who will look to bounce back and punch their ticket to the Canada West final on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. PST, and will be live on www.canadawest.tv.
