Kehlsie Crone and
Alyssia Kajati both had 19 points as the University of Regina's women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep with an 84-73 win over Victoria on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Ranked No. 3 in the CIS, the Cougars (15-1) have now won 10 consecutive Canada West games.
Crone was all over the stat sheet for the U of R in the win, as she also had seven rebounds and six assists to go along with her 19 points. Kajati fell just short of a double-double, picking up a game-high nine rebounds.
Katie Polischuk added 13 points and
Charlotte Kot scored 10 as the Cougars saw four of their five starters hit double figures in points.
Jenna Bugiardini and Nicole Karstein led Victoria (7-11) with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
"Tonight was a hard-fought game between two explosive offensive teams," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "At this time of the season, any time you can walk away with a win you're happy and that's what happened tonight. It was great to see a couple different starters step up for us tonight – Crone and Kajati both had great games."
While the Cougars took the lead for good three and a half minutes into the game, the contest stayed tight well into the second half. The U of R held a 27-21 lead after the opening quarter thanks to a late triple by Crone, and took a 48-35 lead as Polischuk hit a three at the halftime buzzer.
Polischuk opened the second half with a bucket to extend the lead to 15, but the Cougars didn't score a single field goal over the next seven minutes as Victoria's 16-2 run brought the Vikes all the way back to within one. The Cougars had a response, though, going on an 11-1 run that spanned the final minute of the third and the first minute of the fourth to go back by double digits. And they didn't lead by fewer than eight points the rest of the way, getting contributions from nearly everyone on the roster to hold off Victoria for the win.
The Cougars will now prepare for a key road series against a Calgary team which is just below them in the Pioneer Division standings at 13-4. A win for the U of R over the Dinos would clinch a top-three finish and a home series in the Canada West quarterfinals, which would likely begin on Mar. 3.
Victoria has a pivotal Canada West series upcoming in two weeks against Brandon, one of the teams the Vikes are battling with for playoff position in the division. While Brandon, Winnipeg, and UBC each have 6-10 records and two games in hand on Victoria, the Vikes hold their postseason destiny in their hands as two wins over the Bobcats will clinch a playoff position regardless of any other results on the out-of-town scoreboard.
