The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a three-set road loss to Brandon University on Friday night as the two teams finished off their two-match series at the Healthy Living Centre on the BU campus.
The first set saw Brandon go up 21-18, but a 6-2 run by the Cougars gave the visitors a chance to open up the match with a win. But set points at both 24-23 and and 25-24 for Regina ended the same way – with Brandon getting a Nikki Majewski kill to stay alive. The Bobcats weren't able to convert on their first attempt at set point after going up 26-25, but Danielle Larocque stepped up soon thereafter and rattled off an ace to give the Bobcats a 28-26 win.
The Cougars attempted to go on another late run in the second set after a 4-1 push following a Regina timeout, but Brandon's Sydney Toninato got a kill and an ace on back-to-back plays to give the Bobcats a 25-21 win. The third set was a back-and-forth affair which saw nine tie scores and five lead changes, but Brandon finished it off with three straight points capped by another Majewski kill to claim the match with another 25-21 victory.
Majewski finished as the match's leader in kills with 12 and also added 10 digs for a double-double. Brandon libero Gillian Leech had 17 digs, while Courtney Roberts and Ravyn Wiebe both chipped in with nine kills and setter Mary Thomson had 31 assists. The Bobcats improve their Canada West record to 4-10 with the win.
Diana Lumbala (pictured) led Regina with 11 kills and also hit a team-leading .320 for the Cougars (1-13).
Kathleen Bruce and
Jenna Krahn both finished with nine kills, while third-year libero
Taylor Ungar led all players with 18 digs.
The Cougars return home next weekend for Friday and Saturday matches against the University of Winnipeg.
