Cougars drop road contest against Mount Royal

The University of Regina women's hockey team lost a 2-1 decision to Mount Royal University at the Flames Community Arenas on Friday night.

Kylee Kupper scored her seventh of the season in the loss. Tianna Ko and Shawni Rodeback found the net for the home team.

Morgan Baker got the nod for the Cougars, stopping 33 shots in net. Emma Pincott made 21 saves for MRU.

The two teams played the first 20 minutes with no score, though Jaycee Magwood almost had her 12th of the season but rung a high shot off the crossbar.

Kupper opened the scoring near the end of the second period following a bad turnover by Mount Royal. The fourth-year forward's shot deflected off a body in front of the MRU net and slipped past Pincott for the game's first goal.

Mount Royal managed to reply before the period ended, as Ko knocked in a bouncing puck on the powerplay for her sixth goal of her rookie campaign.

The home team took their first lead of the game at the 7:33 mark of the third as Rodeback's shot found its way through traffic and beat Baker for what would prove to be the winner.

The loss drops Regina to 9-10-2-0 and stretches the Cougars' losing streak to four games. MRU improves to 8-10-1-2 with the win.

The two teams will battle again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m.
