The University of Regina's men's basketball team fell to 6-8 on the season after losing 95-85 to Brandon on Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon, Man.
Brandon never trailed and opened up a lead that reached as many as 20 points after reeling off a 19-4 run in the third quarter. The Cougars responded to that Brandon surge with a 16-4 run of their own to get to within eight, but Brandon immediately restored the double-digit lead and never led by fewer than 12 points until a Regina triple in the closing moments of the contest.
Tyvon Cooper and Earl Thompson, Jr. both had 25 points for Brandon, which improves to 6-8 in conference play. Thompson also had 10 rebounds, while John Paul finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds as both players registered double-doubles in the win. Chris Stanhope added 15 points for the Bobcats.
Brandon Tull had a season-high 22 points for Regina, while rookie
Carter Millar came off the bench to notch a career-high 15 points.
Travis Sylvestre (14 points),
Alex Igual (12), and
Johneil Johnson (10) also hit double figures in scoring.
The Cougars are now tied with Fraser Valley for 11th in the conference standings, but remain one win ahead of Victoria (5-9) for the final Canada West postseason berth. Regina hosts second-place Calgary (11-3) next weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
NOTES: Tull passed Mark Benesh for 16th on the U of R's all-time scoring list ... Tull has 1031 career points and needs only three more to pass Ryan Michell for 15th place.
