The No. 4-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team opened up the second half of the Canada West schedule with a convincing 76-38 win over UBC Okanagan on Friday night in Kelowna, B.C.
Four Cougars hit double figures in scoring in the win, led by
Katie Polischuk's game-high 16 points.
Britton Belyk scored 11 points and
Kyanna Giles and
Avery Pearce (pictured) both had 10 as the Cougars improve their Canada West record to 7-2 on the season.
"We were a bit rusty on the offensive end coming off the break," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "But I thought our defensive focus was as good as it's been all year, and we'll need to continue building on that as we move forward."
But while the Cougars may have been rusty offensively, there was also likely some rust on the UBC Okanagan side to start with as the first field goal wasn't scored until over four minutes into the contest and the two teams combined for only 22 points in the first quarter. Regina led 14-8 after the opening 10 minutes, but the visiting Cougars closed the half on a 17-3 run and took a 37-20 lead into the break.
After halftime, the Cougars scored 16 consecutive points in the third quarter to end any hope of a UBC Okanagan comeback.
Regina enjoyed a 52-29 rebounding advantage in the win, led by eight from
Ainsley MacIntyre and six apiece from Giles and
Christina McCusker.
UBC Okanagan (2-9) was led by Emily Kanester's team-high 13 points.
The two teams will play again on Saturday night (5:00 PT).
