Rookie guard
Kyanna Giles led all players in scoring, rebounding, and steals as the University of Regina's women's basketball team completed a weekend road sweep with an 80-60 win over UBC Okanagan on Saturday night in Kelowna, B.C.
Giles scored 18 points and fell just short of a double-double with nine rebounds while also collecting a game-high five steals for the No. 4-ranked Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 8-2 with the victory.
UBC Okanagan led for a large portion of the first half, but a 15-2 run by the Cougars in the second quarter gave the visitors a lead they'd never relinquish. They took an eight-point lead into halftime and though the Heat made it a one-possession game early in the third quarter, the Cougars scored 11 straight points as part of an 18-2 run and sealed the win down the stretch by holding UBC Okanagan scoreless for over four minutes in the fourth.
"It's always good to get a sweep on the road," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "Our defensive energy wasn't as good tonight as it was last night, but we were able to put together a couple of offensive runs that decided that game."
Three other Cougars scored in double figures, including
Christina McCusker with 11 points and
Avery Pearce and
Katie Polischuk with 10 apiece. Polischuk also had six rebounds and four steals for the U of R.
Emily Kanester led UBC Okanagan (2-10) with 15 points.
Now tied with UBC for third place in the Canada West standings, the Cougars return home next Friday and Saturday for a pair of games against a Manitoba team that will come into the weekend with a 1-9 conference record.
