Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball goes 1-1 on eastern road swing

The University of Regina's women's basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend on a non-conference road trip, losing 85-71 to McGill on Friday night in Montreal before recovering for an 80-65 win over Carleton on Sunday afternoon in Ottawa.

The McGill tandem of Frederique Potvin and Geraldine Cabillo-Abante was too much for the Cougars to overcome on Friday. Potvin was 8-for-15 from the field and 5-for-9 from three-point range and finished with 22 points, while Cabillo-Abante scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting while draining both of her attempts from beyond the arc.

Christina McCusker was 5-for-8 from both the field and the free-throw line, while Charlotte Kot was 7-for-12 from the field as the two players tied for the team lead with 15 points. Kyanna Giles added 12 points while also matching Michaela Kleisinger for the team high in rebounds (6).

The Cougars then travelled by train from Montreal to Ottawa and rode a big second quarter en route to their 15-point win over Carleton. The U of R trailed by two after the opening period, but outscored Carleton by a 20-7 margin in the second to take a double-digit lead into halftime.

Carolina Goncalves (pictured) scored a team-leading 14 points for the Cougars, who spread the ball around nicely as five other players also finished with at least eight – Kot (12), Sara Hubenig (11), Giles (9), McCusker (9), and Caitlin Zacharias (8).

Heather Lindsay led Carleton with 19 points and eight rebounds.

The Cougars will continue their non-conference schedule this weekend at the Calgary Cup. They'll meet Acadia, Waterloo, and Calgary at this tournament before heading back to Regina to prepare for their own non-conference tournament, which they'll host from Oct. 12 through Oct. 15 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
