The University of Regina's women's basketball team opened up the Cougar Classic with a big 79-46 win over Windsor on Thursday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars went on a 9-0 run in the first quarter and remained in command for the rest of the night. They led 24-11 after the opening period, held a 16-point advantage at halftime, and ended any hope of a Windsor comeback with 14 consecutive points in the third quarter that gave them a 28-point advantage over the visiting Lancers.
Sara Hubenig was perfect from the field for the Cougars, finishing 8-for-8 from the field including hitting all four of her three-point attempts as she led all players with 20 points in the win.
Charlotte Kot added 14 points,
Avery Pearce chipped in with 13, and
Carolina Goncalves scored nine points while registering a game-high six assists.
Emily Prevost led Windsor in both points (10) and rebounds (7) as the Lancers fall to 2-1 against U SPORTS opposition this season.
The Cougars are now 5-1 in non-conference play and will take a five-game winning streak into Saturday night's contest against Saskatchewan at the CKHS. That game will tip off at 6:00, and the Cougars will finish off the tournament against Brandon on Sunday afternoon (1:00).
While the Cougars won't play again until Saturday, the tournament continues on Friday night (6:00) with Saskatchewan battling Windsor. Windsor will also play Brandon on Saturday night following the conclusion of the Cougars/Saskatchewan matchup.
