The University of Regina women's hockey team is at home again this weekend for a showdown of first-place teams as the reigning Canada West champion UBC Thunderbirds will visit The Co-operators Centre.
Both teams enter the weekend with a 3-1-0-0 record in Canada West play, as the Cougars swept Mount Royal University last weekend and UBC took two road wins over Calgary.
Looking Back
Regina downed MRU 4-2 on Friday on the strength of
Jaycee Magwood's two goals and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon with help from
Kylee Kupper's goal and assist.
Sarah Hornoi and
Bailey Braden also found the net on Friday night as
Jane Kish got the win in net, and Magwood and
Elise Endicott scored on Saturday with
Morgan Baker winning her first game of the season in goal.
UBC stretched their win streak to three games with 4-1 and 1-0 victories over Calgary last weekend. Madison Patrick, Brielle Bellerive, Emily Costales and Tiffany Chu scored in Friday night's win before Hannah Clayton-Carroll scored with just over two minutes left on Saturday. Amelia Boughn made 19 saves to pick up the shutout win on Saturday afternoon.
Scoring Race
The Cougars and Thunderbirds are dominating the conference's top scorers list two weeks into the season, as both teams have four players in the top ten in points.
Magwood is tied for the conference lead with four goals, while
Jordan Kulbida,Â
Merissa Zerr and Braden all crack the top ten with four points each. Leading the way for the Thunderbirds is Mathea Fischer with five points and Bellerive, Logan Boyd and Shaylee McConnell with four apiece.
Splitting Time
Head coaches
Sarah Hodges and Graham Thomas have each opted to split time with their goaltenders through the first four games. Kish has a 2-0 record with a .949 save percentage while Baker is 1-1 in her two starts. Boughn has a 1-1 record as well, while Tory Micklash has posted a 0.97 goals-against average and won both of her starts.
Looking Further Back
UBC won all four games against the Cougars a season ago en route to the team's third Canada West title. The Cougars still hold a 42-20-1 advantage in all-time regular season matchups between the two teams.
