The University of Regina men's hockey team surrendered three third-period goals on Friday night as the UBC Thunderbirds earned their first home win of the Canada West season.
The Cougars led 2-1 heading into the third, but UBC's scoring burst led them to a 4-2 triumph. Austin Vetterl, Michael Stenerson, Jerret Smith and Davan Fafard scored for UBC. Tyler King notched his third goal of the season and Corwin Stevely scored his first goal in Cougar green and gold.
After Fafard opened the scoring just over 90 seconds in, Stevely was able to beat Matt Hewitt for an unassisted marker later in the first period. King's goal came on the powerplay and gave the Cougars the lead after 40 minutes.
UBC took the lead for good in the final frame, scoring goals at the 9:51, 10:31 and 12:04 marks to complete the comeback and improve to 2-3 on the season. Vettterl assisted on Smith's and Stenerson's goals before scoring his own to cap off the win.
Michael Herringer made 27 saves in the loss, while Hewitt stopped 37 Cougar efforts.
The Cougars (1-3-1) will look to earn the split on Saturday with a 2 p.m. local time puck drop.
