Emma Waldenberger tied it up with just 39 seconds left in regulation and
Kylee Kupper added the shootout winner as the University of Regina women's hockey team took a come-from-behind win over the No. 1 Alberta Pandas on Friday night.
Regina moves to first place in the conference standings with the win, sporting a 4-2-1-0 record. Alberta drops to 4-1-0-2.
Jane Kish was the winning goaltender, stopping 26 shots and picking up her fourth win of the Canada West season. Dayna Owen made 43 saves as Alberta dropped its second shootout decision.
Tamara McVannel also scored, as the Cougars never led on Friday night. After 40 minutes of scoreless hockey, Amy Boucher opened the scoring on the powerplay early in the third period. McVannel scored her second goal in as many games, tipping a shot from
Sarah Hornoi past Owen to even the score.
Alberta took the lead back just over two minutes later as Abby Benning took a cross-ice pass from Kennedy Ganser and netted her first goal of the season. The Cougars fired 15 of their 46 shots towards Owen in the third period, finally tying the game again with just over half a minute to play. With Kish out of the Cougar net, Waldenberger picked up a signature goal by hovering around the crease and putting home a loose puck.
After two overtime periods solved nothing, the Cougars went to their first shootout of the season. After Ganser hit the post with Alberta's first attempt, Kupper went blocker side off the post and in. The two teams traded saves before Kish made a clutch save on Boucher to earn the Cougars the win.
The Cougars and Pandas will battle again on Saturday afternoon, with a 2 p.m. puck drop at the Clare Drake Arena.
