Another late comeback came up just short for the University of Regina women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars fell 3-2 in overtime against the top-ranked Alberta Pandas in Edmonton.
For the second-consecutive game the Cougars never led, but a late goal from Bailey Braden forced overtime before Alberta scored the winner 1:48 into the extra frame. Jordan Kulbida notched her third goal of the Canada West season, while Kennedy Ganser, Deanna Morin and Alex Poznikoff had markers for the Pandas.
Jane Kish made 32 saves in her first loss of the season, as the Cougars drop to 4-2-1-1 but pick up a point with the overtime result. Kirsten Chamberlin stopped 23 Cougar efforts to improve Alberta to 4-1-1-2. The Cougars were 1-4 on the powerplay while Alberta went 1-6.
Ganser opened the scoring late in the first period before Kulbida was able to even it up on a deflection towards the end of the second frame. Morin batted in a rebound for a powerplay goal at the 13:06 mark of the third period but Braden one-timed her fourth goal of the season on the powerplay to draw the Cougars even again.
The Cougars have earned splits both of the past two weekends, against the No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds a week ago before this weekend against the No. 1 Pandas. The conference will now head into the bye week before the Cougars hit the road again for games against the 5-3-0-0 Manitoba Bisons on Nov. 10 and 11.
