The University of Regina women's hockey team broke off a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night.
Emma Waldenberger was the game's lone goal scorer, picking up her fifth of the season on the powerplay in the first period. Jane Kish was flawless in net for Regina, making 16 saves for her fifth win and second shutout of the season.
Waldenberger's goal came at the 17:20 mark of the opening frame after Olivia Alexander was flagged for hooking. Jaycee Magwood fed a pass to Waldenberger at the right circle and she turned and beat a screened Alicia Anderson with a high shot.
The Cougars outshot Lethbridge in all three periods, totalling 39 efforts on goal compared to 16 by the Horns. Lethbridge needed to pull Anderson in the dying minutes to push for the equalizing goal, but a strong forecheck by the Cougars didn't let the Pronghorns out of their own end.
The Cougars and Pronghorns will square off again on Saturday, with game time set for 3 p.m. local time.
