Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Giles, Giles lead Cougars to convincing road win over UBC

Kyanna Giles and Kyia Giles led the University of Regina's women's basketball team in scoring as the Cougars used a big second quarter to pull away from UBC for an 81-54 win over the Thunderbirds on Friday night in Vancouver.

The Cougars led by three after the first quarter, but took control in the second. Regina outscored UBC by a 28-12 margin in the quarter, thanks in large part to eight points by both Kyia Giles and Carolina Goncalves in the period. The Cougars extended that lead to 25 after three quarters to lock up their eighth Canada West win of the season.

The Giles twins combined for 32 points, with Kyanna scoring 17 and Kyia ending up with 15 to mark the second time this season the duo has led the U of R in scoring. Carolina Goncalves added 14 points for the Cougars, while fifth-year post Charlotte Kot scored nine points and added nine rebounds to help the visitors enjoy a 50-35 advantage in rebounding.

Maddison Penn led UBC with 19 points and tied Kot for the game high with nine rebounds.

The Cougars are now 8-1 in conference play and tied for first place in the Canada West standings with Saskatchewan, which lost to Calgary on Friday night. Regina has the second-best RPI in the conference after Friday's game, checking in at .655 behind only Saskatchewan's .693.

The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night (5:00 PST) in Vancouver.
