Cougars settle for split in 2017 finale

The University of Regina women's hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon on Saturday night, as the Huskies pick up the weekend split in the home-and-home series.

A night after the Cougars held the Huskies off the scoresheet at The Co-operators Centre, Saskatchewan returned the favour at their home rink.

Huskie captain Kaitlin Willoughby was the hero for Saskatchewan, recording a powerplay goal at the 11:50 mark of the second period. Willoughby fired a one-timer that was stopped by Jane Kish, but the rebound sat free and Willoughby was able to get there before the Cougars could clear it and poke it home.

Jessica Vance made 27 saves for her third shutout of the season, while Kish stopped 23 shots for Regina.

Regina drops to 6-8-1-1 while the Huskies move to 9-6-0-1 as the first half of the Canada West season wraps up.

The Cougars will return to the ice on the Jan. 5-6 weekend, heading to Calgary for a road matchup with Mount Royal University. Saskatchewan will be back at home as Lethbridge is in town.
