Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Waldenberger scores twice but Cougars fall 4-3

The University of Regina women's hockey team fell 4-3 in a back-and-forth contest against the hometown Calgary Dinos on Friday night.

Delaney Frey, Rylee Smith, Heather Berzins and Sage Desjardins scored for the Dinos. Emma Waldenberger (pictured) notched two goals and Kylee Kupper had one in response for the Cougars.

The Dinos jumped out to a quick start, as Frey scored her fourth of the season on a nice wrist shot just over four minutes into Friday's contest. Smith added to the lead just after the midpoint of the first period with her first of the Canada West campaign.

The Dino's two-goal lead lasted just 40 seconds as Kupper scored on a breakaway off a long assist from Mariah McKersie, who picked up her first point as a Cougar on the play. Waldenberger evened up the scored at the 16:45 mark as the Cougar powerplay went to work and was able to solve Kelsey Roberts. Kylie Gavelin notched an assist on the goal.

Calgary went back on top two and a half minutes into the second, as Berzins was able to beat Morgan Baker, but once again Waldenberger answered with a powerplay marker assisted by Gavelin. Waldenberger's ninth goal came at the 14:14 mark on a five-on-three advantage.

It was an unlikely hero for the Dinos, as the game-winning goal came at the 11:17 mark of the third off the stick of Desjardins. The first-year forward hadn't scored a goal in 26 contests entering the weekend, but came through on the powerplay by knocking in a rebound after a shot from Paige Michalenko.

Regina had nearly two minutes of an extra attacker on the ice with Baker out of her net, but couldn't beat Roberts late. Roberts made 32 saves in the win while Baker stopped 19 shots for the Cougars (10-13-3-1).

The Cougar loss paired with Saskatchewan's 3-1 win over Lethbridge means that Saskatchewan has clinched fourth place and a home playoff weekend. With Mount Royal's loss on Friday the Cougars are locked in to the fifth seed in the conference, which means they'll play in a Canada West quarterfinal series at Saskatchewan next weekend. The Cougars have won both games they've played in Saskatoon this season.

The Cougars and Dinos will face off again on Saturday, with puck drop set for 6 p.m. local time.
