Cougars finish season with road losses to Calgary

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team closed out the 2016-17 season with a pair of road losses to Calgary on Friday and Saturday, losing in straight sets on both nights at the Jack Simpson Gym on the U of C campus.

The matches were the final times in a U of R uniform for fifth-year players Jenna Krahn and Molly Wade-Cummings. Krahn had 307 kills and 294 digs over her five seasons with the Cougars, while Wade-Cummings piled up 372 kills and finishes her U SPORTS career ranked third in school history with 280 blocks.

Third-year libero Taylor Ungar fell just short of setting a U of R single-season record, finishing with 293 digs in 24 Canada West matches played this year. The school record is held by Kelly Cowan, who had 295 digs during the 2006-07 campaign.

The Cougars finish the season with a 3-21 conference record.

Friday – Cougars 0, Calgary 3 (25-20, 25-13, 25-17)
Kate Pexman had 12 kills and hit .455 for Calgary to lead the Dinos to a three-set sweep over Regina in the opening match of the weekend double dip.

The first set featured two hot-hitting teams, with the Cougars registering a .303 hitting percentage but Calgary even more efficient at a .429 clip. The set was close until a late run for the Dinos, which saw them score the final four points of the set to take a 25-20 win.

The second and third set followed similar scripts, with Calgary jumping out to an early lead in both. The Dinos were up 16-10 at the technical timeout and scored nine of the final 11 points to win 25-13, then the home side went on an early 10-1 run and cruised to a 25-17 match-clinching win.

Brianna Solberg added nine kills and hit .562 for the Dinos, while Jaylynn Moffatt put down eight kills and Hannah Tanasichuk collected seven kills. Solberg and libero Kennedy Snape tied for the match lead with nine digs for Calgary, which hit .398 as a team in the win.

Kathleen Bruce had a team-leading eight kills for the Cougars, while Jordin Gudmundson, Krahn, and Wade-Cummings each chipped in with six kills. Gudmundson and Ungar both had seven kills for the U of R.

Saturday – Cougars 0, Calgary 3 (25-18, 25-16, 25-21)
For the second consecutive night, Pexman led all players in kills as the Dinos completed a weekend sweep with another three-set win over Regina.

All three sets featured a momentum-changing run by Calgary. The first set saw the Dinos finish on an 11-3 run, while the Dinos took control in the second with a 12-4 run midway through the frame. Calgary went on separate 7-2 and 5-1 runs in the third set, though the Dinos needed to hold off a late Cougar charge to hang on for the 25-21 win.

Pexman not only had 13 kills, but also led all players with 10 digs. Moffatt had nine kills and hit .412 while also collecting four blocks, and Solberg added seven kills and nine digs.

Wade-Cummings and Diana Lumbala both had eight killls, while Wade-Cummings also had a big match defensively with a match-leading eight blocks. Krahn led Regina with eight kills.
