Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars start Canada West season with 0-0 draw

The University of Regina women's soccer team opened the 2017 Canada West campaign with a 0-0 draw against the Manitoba Bisons, as both teams start the season with a point in the standings.

Regina registered 10 total shots, six of which were on net including a misplayed ball by Bison keeper Justina Jarmoszko that bounced off the post and free of harm. The Bisons put 17 efforts towards the goal, with eight shots on net. Florin Wagner led the way for Manitoba's attack with a match-high four shots on goal.

Clean Sheets
The keepers were flawless for both teams, as Savannah Williams earned the second shutout of her career by making eight saves on Friday night. Second-year netminder Jarmoszko stopped all five Regina shots that were on target. Bisons midfielder Rebecca Martin should also receive some credit, blocking a Sydney Langen shot that was headed for the net in the first minute.

A Flurry of Chances
The Cougars put the pressure on with just over ten minutes to go, as Cassie Longmuir, Sally Bachmann and Shayla Kapila each had a shot on goal within a five-minute span, and Kirsten Finley had a breakaway opportunity that saw her shot sail high. Manitoba's Amanda Wong tried to get Manitoba on the board with shots in the 80th and 84th minutes, but Williams was up to the task on both.

New Faces
The Cougars had a pair of first-year athletes make their Canada West debuts, as Bachmann and Kyra Vibert got their first taste of U SPORTS competition. Bachmann, a rookie out of Pitt Meadows, B.C., and Regina-born Vibert each came on as halftime substitutions for Cougar head coach Bob Maltman.

Next Up
The Cougars don't have to worry about any travel on their off day, as they'll stay put in Winnipeg and square off against the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. local time at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex. Winnipeg fell victim to a 3-2 defeat to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night.
