The University of Regina women's hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision in a penalty-filed affair against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Friday night.
All four UBC goals came on the powerplay as the home team had 15Â powerplay opportunities on the night, while Regina went 1/10 with the man advantage.
Emily Costales scored twice for UBC, while Hannah Clayton-Carroll and Madison Patrick also found the net. Jaycee Magwood and Merissa Zerr replied for the Cougars, who fall to 6-10-1-2.
Jane Kish made 29 saves on the evening while Tory Micklash stopped 19 shots as UBC passes Manitoba and moves into first place in the Canada West standings.
UBC opened the game with powerplay goals just five minutes apart to take a 2-0 lead midway through the first. Regina answered as Magwood notched her fifth goal of the season off setups from Emma Waldenberger and Bailey Braden at 17:39 of the first period.
Costales and Patrick stretched the lead to 4-1 as UBC had eight powerplay chances in the second period alone.
Zerr made things a little more interesting with a shorthanded marker in the third, slipping one past Micklash on the breakaway for her first of the season. That was as close as the Cougars would get, as UBC was able to kill off a 6-on-3 advantage and come away with the win.
The Cougars and Thunderbirds will face off again on Saturday for the final time in the Canada West regular season. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.
