The University of Regina women's hockey team was on the wrong end of a 3-2 double-overtime decision against the first-place UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Saturday afternoon.
Cassandra Vilgrain was the hero for UBC, scoring one goal in the second period and adding the winner on a penalty shot in the second overtime frame. Mathea Fischer also scored as UBC improves to 12-4-2-2.
Jaycee Magwood and Emma Waldenberger scored for Regina, as the Cougars salvage a point with the overtime result and move to 6-10-1-3.
Morgan Baker got the call in net for Regina, making 21 saves. Amelia Boughn got the win for UBC, stopping 31 Cougar efforts.
Fischer opened the scoring with less than 20 seconds to play in the first period, but Magwood evened the score on a setup from Jordan Kulbida early in the second.
Waldenberger drew the Cougars even with her sixth of the season at the 4:24 mark of the third period. Waldenberger's third point of the weekend tied things up as the Cougars outshot UBC 15-1 in the final regulation period.
There was no scoring in the first overtime period but play opened up in the three-on-three second overtime. UBC crashed the net hard with under 30 seconds to play in the second overtime and amidst a wild scramble a Cougar was whistled for covering the puck in the crease. UBC was awarded a penalty shot and Vilgrain ended the game with a deke to her backhand.
The Cougars will return to home ice for the first time in 2018 next weekend, playing host to the Alberta Pandas for a weekend set.
