The University of Regina women's hockey team will take to home ice for the first time in 2018 this weekend, as the No. 1-ranked Alberta Pandas are in town for a pair of contests.

Alberta holds the top ranking in the country despite sitting third in the Canada West standings with a 9-4-4-3 record. The Cougars have dropped five-straight games and currently hold the sixth and final Canada West playoff spot with a 6-10-1-3 record.

Cougar Report

Regina is off to a rocky start in the New Year, falling 1-0 and 3-0 at Mount Royal to kick of the 2018 portion of the season and dropping 4-2 and 3-2 decisions against the No. 3-ranked UBC Thunderbirds last weekend.

After a scoring drought that saw the Cougars go more than three games without finding the net, Emma Waldenberger and Jaycee Magwood got back on track against UBC, which has allowed the second-fewest goals in the conference. Magwood scored in both contests while Waldenberger tallied a goal and two helpers on the weekend.

Waldenberger and Magwood are tied for the team lead in points with six goals and five assists each. Bailey Braden has four goals and five assists to her credit while Tamara McVannel has chipped in from the blue line with five goals and three assists.

Jane Kish has made 14 appearances in goal for the Cougars, posting an impressive 1.48 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage. Morgan Baker has seen action in six games, earning one win with a 3.27 GAA and .891 save percentage. Both Kish and Baker made one start in last weekend's games against UBC.

Panda Watch

Alberta's Autumn MacDougall is atop the Canada West points list by a wide margin, notching 10 goals and 10 assists in 20 games. Alex Poznikoff and Kennedy Ganser each have 13 points while Amy Boucher and Cayle Dillon have both added 12 as the Pandas lead Canada West with 48 goals scored.

Dayna Owen and Kirsten Chamberlin have split time between the pipes for Alberta, with Owen making 11 starts and Chamberlin making nine. Owen has seven wins with a 1.66 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage while Chamberlin has posted numbers of 1.43 and .922.

Previous Meetings

The Cougars and Pandas met at the end of October, with Regina taking the opener 3-2 in a shootout and Alberta rebounding for a 3-2 overtime win the following afternoon. Waldenberger and McVannel had goals in the Cougar win with Kylee Kupper netting the shootout winner and Kish stopping all three Panda efforts.
