Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougar comeback falls short in shootout with Bisons

The University of Regina men's hockey team was on the wrong end of an 8-6 decision in the highest-scoring Canada West game this season, as the Manitoba Bisons took the win on home ice on Friday night.

Liam Bilton and Quintin Lisoway both scored two goals for the Bisons, while Blake Heinrich, Michael St. Croix, Brett Brooks and Brad Bowles each added one. Landon Peel had two tallies for the Cougars, who got singles from Ben Duperreault, Stephen Langford, Jordan Burns and Zach McPhee.

Dawson MacAuley made 27 saves as the Cougars drop to 3-18-2 on the season. Byron Spriggs got the win in net for Manitoba, making 16 saves before Justin Paulic took over in the third period and stopped four shots.

The Bisons went for four goals in the first period after Duperreault opened the scoring at the three minute mark, as Heinrich and St. Croix both scored then Bilton lit the lamp at the 11:47 and 13:28 marks. Peel opened the scoring in the second period but three straight from Manitoba blew the game open and put the Bisons up 7-2.

Burns scored at the end of the second before McPhee and Peel netted third-period goals, but Lisoway's second at the 18:19 mark made it all but official. Langford scored just 18 seconds later but time ran out on the Cougar comeback as Manitoba took the weekend opener.

Manitoba (13-8-2) will host the Cougars again on Saturday, with puck drop set for 1 p.m. at Wayne Fleming Arena.
