Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars complete weekend sweep with three-set win over MacEwan

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team finished off a weekend road sweep on Saturday, overpowering the MacEwan Griffins in three straight sets at the City Centre Campus Gym in Edmonton.

The win improves the surging Cougars' record to 11-9 on the season as Regina has now won six of its past seven matches. The U of R sits alone in fifth place in the Canada West standings with two home matches against UBC (15-2) and Manitoba (8-10) to finish off the conference schedule.

After Friday's marathon five-set match, the Cougars made quick work of MacEwan on Saturday. They won 25-22 in the first set, then scored 25-16 and 25-17 wins in the second and third to notch the victory.

Ashlee Sandiford again led Regina in kills, finishing with a match-high 10 to go along with 10 digs. Haley Wagar added eight kills, while rookie Jessica Lerminiaux finished with seven kills and 11 digs. Satomi Togawa compiled 27 assists and nine digs for the U of R, with libero Taylor Ungar getting credit for 29 digs in the three-set match.

MacEwan (2-16) was led by six kills from Cassidy Kinsella.

Looking to lock up their first postseason berth since 2014, the Cougars play in the friendly confines of the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport each of the next two weekends. They'll face conference-leading UBC next Friday and Saturday before squaring off with Manitoba on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10.
